Mathematics anxiety and self-concept in children and the mathematics anxiety of their caregivers in relation to early mathematical skills in kindergarten education.

November 28 @ 14:00 - 15:00

The MEMAT Colloquium in November aims to present the preliminary findings of a study that explores the relationship between mathematical anxiety and mathematical skills in kindergartners from three regions of Chile, considering the role played by the mathematical self-concept of the children and the mathematical anxiety of their main caregivers.
The event will be led by Esmeralda Dionicio, MEMAT PhD student.
Esmeralda is an early childhood educator, and later continued her academic training by pursuing a Master’s degree in Science with a specialization in Educational Research at the Department of Educational Research at CINVESTAV, IPN in Mexico. Currently, she is a PhD student in Education at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile under the mentorship of Dr. Ma. Inés Susperreguy.
Her current research focuses on the study of mathematics anxiety in kindergarten children and its association with performance in early mathematical skills, considering individual and interpersonal factors that are present in this relationship.
In Chile, Esmeralda has participated in several research projects. She has worked on the development of “MathPath,” an educational software designed at the Laboratory of Numerical Cognition and Early Mathematical Learning at Universidad Diego Portales, which aims to improve the mathematical skills of children from 5 to 6 years old. She has also collaborated in the evaluation of a mentoring program with the use of technologies for teachers and new educators, in alliance with Elige Educar. Both projects highlight the importance of the use of technology in education and consider affective factors in learning as areas relevant to the current educational context.
